While driving the ATV it is easy to lose balance, sharp turns, spinning, jumping, etc. can cause the atv to roll. First, in order to keep your balance, you must either sit or squat depending upon terrain. In general sit while going straight or turning. When traveling over uneven terrain ride in the squatting position. In both positions it is important that the riders legs not extend from the sides of the vehicle but rather stay snug against the gas tank and sides of the vehicle. The legs should only be used to balance by advanced riders. Driving position is the prerequisite to master other skills, these techniques are fundamental in learning to ride properly.
ATV riding can be very dangerous when traveling up any grade. When encountering a hill always be sure to know your limit. When climbing a hill the forward motion of the rear tire can cause the atv to roll over and onto the rider. It is not uncommon for an inexperienced rider to take on a slope that is to difficult for him. Contrary to people common perception of the vehicles Atvs do not climb hills easily. Hill climbing is yet another aspect of riding that should be practiced with a great deal of caution.
When riding up a hill a rider should sit in the prone position, pushing all his weight out over the handlebars. This will prevent backward roll of the vehicle. NEVER let off the throttle when climbing a hill. Should the vehicle stop on a hill DO NOT try to continue a climb from the place you stopped in. Instead turn the vehicle around and go back to the bottom, than retry your climb. Always be sure to PICK A LINE or path that you will travel up the hill…it is important to know how you will approach a hill before you begin to climb it. The principals for traveling down a hill are similar to those of going up a hill. When traveling down hill sit back on the atv to prevent forward roll. As you travel down the hill apply the front and rear brake…use more rear than front. Should you come to a stop apply less brake and continue down the hill. Avoid obstacles and try to travel as straight as possible on your decent.
Leaning to ride can be difficult at first but with practice and attentiveness anyone is capable of becoming a decent rider. Take things slow and always adhere to the basic principals listed above and you should have a safe enjoyable ride no matter where you go.
